The banking industry is often faced with complex amount of hardware and software driven applications.
Given the different verticals within the banking industry and the fact that the banking industry and its continuous evolution has to be able to deal with its legacy systems in order to embrace the new technologies that it's presented on a daily basis that make that makes its banking system more efficient and accountable.
Mainframe systems are still a very core part of the banking industry. With that said mainframe skills are not easily available in the African markets. With this shortage of skill banks and the IT departments have to explore entirely new way ways of thinking about how to function and maintain their legacy systems.
With its DB2, COBOL, mainframe, skills that I shortage within a country like South Africa, it doesn't mean that the banks within the country have necessity to outsource their mainframe requirements to another country. The opportunity exists for banks to recruit and bring those skills into the banking environment within its departments and to be able to use those skills that it has imported to train and to enhance the skill sets and experiences of the people that it has within it system.
Whether it is business analysts, senior developers, mainframe skills, Oracle skills, SAP skills that the bank may need for its IT processes, banks need to find a way beyond an environment of sourcing chaos and they need to adopt a sourcing strategy that does not involve a few isolated changes. In this process of creating a sourcing strategy is way you start your journey to multi-sourcing.
The challenge for many divisions within the banking environment is to be able to align their business strategy with the IT strategy which in turn impacts on the sourcing strategy. A sourcing strategy is a set or portfolio of plans, directives; and decisions that define and integrate internally and externally provided services to fulfill an enterprise business strategy. The challenge of a sourcing strategy is to continuously deliver to the organization the exact combination of internal and external resources and services that are necessary to support business objectives.
Once these strategies align it becomes a matter of the IT department selecting the correct sourcing partner to bring the necessary IT skills to meet the business goals of the organization.
It is at this point that the careful selection process of choosing the right outsourcing partner to work with will bring you a well-balanced team to match a well-balanced business strategy.
